Woman flossing

In this post I reveal the best woven dental floss alternatives to Listerine Gentle Gum Care.

If you enjoy using woven floss like I do, you were probably disappointed to hear that Listerine’s Gentle Gum Care dental floss has been discontinued.

After learning this, I went on a journey to find the best woven floss on the market and was surprised by what I discovered.

Are you ready to learn more?

Woven dental floss

Let’s get started!

What's the Best Woven Dental Floss?

Here’s my top pick for the best woven dental floss now that Listerine Gentle Gum Care has been discontinued:

Top Pick: Cocofloss Woven Dental Floss

If you were ever disappointed that Listerine Gentle Gum Care floss only came in Cinnamon flavor, then you will have to try Cocofloss.

It comes in a wide range of flavors including mint, coconut, strawberry, orange, vanilla bean, and dark chocolate.

More importantly, this is actually woven floss! It is made with over 500 polyester fibers that are infused with coconut oil and lightly waxed.

According to the product page on Amazon, Cocofloss claims that using this floss feels like “a loofah for your teeth!”

Last but not least, Cocofloss is vegan and cruelty-free.

Cocofloss is my top rated alternative to Listerine Gentle Gum Care woven floss. It is currently available on Amazon in a 3-roll set for $25. Single rolls are available on their website for $9 each.

Who Makes Woven Dental Floss?

In my research I found only a few other companies that make woven dental floss similar to Listerine Gentle Gum Care.

Not all of these alternatives are actually “woven” floss but I included them because they had a similar soft feeling on my gums and did a great job at removing plaque.

Here are a few of my new favorite brands of woven dental floss:

Hayden Expanding Dental Floss

Hayden Expanding Floss is made of hundreds of nylon microfibers which are designed to remove plaque and stain deposits.

Expanding floss is unique in the fact that when it comes into contact with the saliva between your teeth it expands. The floss is coated in a mint flavored wax to hold the fibers together.

These special design features mean it can fit into small gaps between teeth while still remaining shred proof.

If you enjoyed the softness of Listerine Gentle Gum Care, you might also like Hayden Expanding Floss. It doesn’t cut into your gums like traditional floss and is comfortable to use.

It is available in a Polar Mint flavor.

Listerine Ultraclean Dental Floss

When I was shopping on Amazon for alternatives to Listerine Gentle Gum Care woven floss, the new Listerine Ultraclean floss appeared frequently.

My guess is that Johnson & Johnson created this new type of dental floss to replace their discontinued woven floss brand.

However, this product is not woven.

Instead, it is more like a tape floss with added texture. The extra texture gives more of a scrubbing feeling on your gums and teeth.

I should also point out that this floss is very stretchy. You might think it feels like flossing with a rubber band.

GUM Expanding Dental Floss

GUM Expanding Floss is made of texturized nylon and lightly coated with wax. When it comes into contact with saliva between your teeth the fibers expand, making it easier to remove plaque in hard to reach places.

It is very similar to the Hayden brand expanding floss. The unique advantage of this expanding floss is that it comes unflavored and unscented.

If you used Oral B Ultra Floss before it was discontinued, this might be a great alternative.

DrTungs Smart Floss

DrTungs Smart Floss is another popular brand of expanding floss. It is made out of hundreds of thin polyester fibers and lightly coated with vegetable and bee’s wax.

In my opinion DrTungs smart floss is soft like Listerine Gentle Gum Care but thicker than traditional woven floss after it expands.

The only differentiating factor between DrTungs and the GUM or Hayden brands is the flavor. DrTungs Smart Floss is infused with a natural cardamom flavor, which has a zesty citrus mint taste.

Has Listerine Gentle Gum Care Woven Floss Been Discontinued?

Listerine Gentle Gum Care Discontinued Announcement

Yes, it appears that Listerine Gentle Gum Care Woven Floss has been discontinued.

Over the past year I began to notice that my favorite brand of woven floss was constantly out of stock. I decided to return to using traditonal waxed floss until it reappeared in stores but it never did.

Sadly, only a small amount of Listerine woven floss is still available for sale online. Resellers are charging as much as $45 per package!

As of the time of publication, I have not received a response from Johnson & Johnson about why the product was discontinued.

Is Woven Floss Better Than Waxed Floss?

Woven floss is considered by many to be better than waxed floss because it removes more plaque. It feels soft between your fingers, yet strong.

The woven polyester fibers create a wider surface area when used between tight teeth and are gentle on sensitive gums.

Unlike traditional waxed floss, woven floss does not cut into your gums as easily. For those with delicate gums, woven floss is less likely to cause bleeding and irritation.

In my research I found that one of the top complaints about woven floss is that it shreds easily. I never found this to be a frequent problem for myself.

What is Woven Floss Made Of?

Woven floss is made of hundreds of thin nylon, polyester, or cotton fibers. The fibers are often infused with flavors, such as mint, and coated in a microcrystalline wax.

Listerine Gentle Gum Care was the most popular brand of woven floss made by Johnson & Johnson until it was discontinued in 2019. Other brands that continue to produce woven floss include Cocofloss, Hayden, and DrTungs.

Have you found a good replacement for Listerine Gentle Gum Care woven floss? Please leave a comment below and let me know!
Same. Very disappointed. Are there any activists starting a request to J&J to resume production of woven? I would sign
Thank you for your article. It sucks to not have much woven floss any more.
Well, I'm not going on e-bay and get into a bidding war for one container of woven floss starting at $150.00. I will find another way....
Ryan Hart
Hi Joe, I would give Cocofloss or DrTungs a try if you are open to using a different brand of woven floss. Let me know how it goes!
I am more than a little disappointed to learn J&J has discontinued this floss. When I first discovered it, I was a dental hygienist with very tight tooth contacts. This was one of the few flosses that rarely shredded for me, and I loved the way it made my teeth "squeeky clean". I have promoted it over the years, giving sample packs, and giving it to family members and friends (a quirk I'm sure other hygienists may have...). Now, to call the company and share my disapproval, as well as find a substitute, if possible. Thank you for your suggestions. Also, try looking at dollar and discount stores. Sometimes they have discontinued items, and you can buy them up!

Great tip about looking at discount stores! Thanks for your comment.
I’m a hygienist and I contacted Listerine Immediately after discontinuing the product.I use this floss exclusively and have recommended it to a lot of patients.I don’t know if I like the idea of a waxed woven floss.I don’t think the listerine woven was waxed
Ryan Hart
Thanks for your comment. Which brand of floss are you going to recommend to your patients now that Gentle Gum Care has been discontinued?

Also disappointed in the loss of Ultra Floss. went to Amazon and decided to try Hayden Expanding Floss. Quite by accident I rinsed it off with hot water and found it really expands with that treatment and behaves much like the Oral-B. It shrinks when it expands so cut off about 20 to 24 inches. I like it.

I've been married to a dental hygienist for 43 years. In their profession it is widely understood the advantages, both comfort wise and cleaning capabilities of a woven, "gental gum care" dental floss.
I can't believe I just paid $13 for floss ($9 +$4 shipping) I'm trying the cocofloss because even after the cost of shipping, it's still a lot cheaper than Hayden's. I tried Listerine's Ultra Clean. Made more poor sensitive gums bleed. Not as badly as typical "satin" floss, but still. It's made it so my sensitivity is a lot worse and so it's hard to eat. We'll see. If Cocofloss doesn't work, perhaps I'll try DrTung. Can you believe it's 2021 and there's still no woven floss equivalent? And some of Listerine's comments have been really condescending. I'm not sure they understand that there's an entire corner of the flossing market that has *nothing to use*. It's just waiting for someone to grab our business. Was the profit margin really that low?
Miss my woven floss!
Agreed. I’m a dental hygienist too
I'm using Frau Fowler eoFLOSS. It works but I wish J&J would have publicized the discontinuance so I could have stocked up. Now it seems like they won't even return requests. Another lousy company run by bean counters instead of people who care.

Thank you for the article... It is very informative and helpful... I had switched from Oral B Ultra Floss to Listerine Gentle Gum Care due to discontinuation and now will have to try another similar alternative...

THANK YOU!!! I've been so frustrated - I had assumed that this product was just out of stock due to ongoing pandemic shortages of random products. Thank you for doing this research, since regular floss is just not cutting it for my gums (pun intended).
I was so upset when I found out they were discontinuing woven floss that I emailed Listerine. Their reply was pretty dismissive, and it was clear that the opinions of their customers don't matter much to them. I went searching, read about Coco Floss, and ended up finding it at Target - for approx $9! I couldn't believe I was actually spending that much money on one little container of dental floss! For that much money I was expecting to be dazzled, but unfortunately it was a huge disappointment. I loved woven floss because I have sensitive gums, and the Coco floss made my gums bleed badly. I was hoping my gums would adjust, but after using the whole container, flossing every night, my gums were still bleeding every time. I then tried a small package of the new Listerine Ultraclean, which I think is the replacement for the woven floss. It's definitely not as good as the woven, but it never made my gums bleed, and it is much better than the Coco floss or regular old wax floss. So, until they come around and make woven floss again I guess that's what I'll be (grudgingly) using, because there's just no way, no matter how much I miss it, that I'm spending $40/container for woven floss on Ebay!

I was disappointed when I heard of the discontinuation of Gentle Gun Care. My Hygienist daughter was also disappointed. I had recommended this floss to my patients for years. When I called J&J, I was told they didn't know why it was discontinued.
Ryan Hart
I am disappointed, too! Please let me know what brand you start recommending to your patients. Thanks for your comment.
Why did they have to discontinue the best floss on the market? I find that cocofloss is the closest next best thing.
Jose Nova
I am incensed that J&J would discontinue their woven floss in the face of so many disappointed former users. I must using the wrong cocofloss because it is just like string floss - no expansion at all and it hurts my gums. There is no viable alternative to J&J woven floss.

I didn’t catch the date of your article but I am devastated that Listerine Woven Dental Floss was discontinued in 2019! I just finished my last container (5/2021) due to the fact that I bought multiple packs at a time and they were always hard to find. I happened upon your article while trying to find out what happened to my favorite floss. Thank you for your input of new ones to try & will consider those options. I hate dental floss tape! Sincerely, Leslie K
I too was struggling to find the Listerine Gentle Gum Care woven floss in stock, so when I found it I would buy all there was on the shelf. Sadly my stock has finally come to an end and I was again struggling to find it in stock in my usual places. I'd seen the Cocofloss on Amazon and other online searches, but still held out hope that maybe due to Covid the production of LGGCWF was just suspended. That is until I read your article. I'm quite saddened that the decision was made by J&J to stop making it!!! Argh! Thank you for your research and insights. I guess I'll give the Cocofloss a reluctant try.
I was SO disappointed when I found out J & J floss was discontinued. I couldn't understand why I couldn't find it in stores anymore or why it was $50 a pack on Amazon. The dental hygentist at my dentist's office told me she called J & J and they said the man that patented the floss no longer wanted it made and it had to stop being made. J & J floss was the only floss that made my teeth feel really clean.
I am very disappointed that listerine no longer sells gentle gum care floss. The floss I use is not taking care of the plaque like gentle gum care floss. Hopefully Listerine will see all the comments and rethink their decision.
Exactly like all the above comments, I am another disappointed ex-user of woven dental floss. Once I had discovered it, that was all I had used. My understanding was the area of J&J which had manufactured woven floss, had sold that section of the Company to Reach. To date, I have not found a great alternative.
Cocofloss is where it's at! It's almost as good as the listerine woven floss. And the flavors are actually great.
Jessica Saunders
I am a dental hygienist and I have found the Burst branded floss to be the best alternative to the woven floss! Patients are loving it

Thanks for the article. Same boat as everyone else :( Dr. Tung's is too thick for me.
